‘I slammed into the surf, feeling the cool rush hit my body. Soft foam crackled between my legs as I waded into the water up to my stomach. I looked across the water trying to decipher between the dark shadows of the waves and the fins or bodies of larger moving creatures. But I could not tell the shadows apart. I thought many times that I saw black shining skin, and sharp solid waves. But I can’t be certain. What was for certain was the overwhelming melody, bidding me to join them. They were sirens, drawing me further towards the rip tide; towards my certain death.’
